A4.1. Conference Excursions: Scientific field trip

Date: June 4th 2025, 8:20 to 16:00

Location: UPC Campus Nord (Departure point)

How to Get: Google Maps

Join us for a full-day excursion to explore one of the most important coastal aquifers near Barcelona—the Llobregat Aquifer.

For decades, the deep aquifer of the Llobregat Delta has faced serious salinization due to overextraction and the expansion of the Port of Barcelona. To tackle this issue, a cutting-edge hydraulic barrier was put in place. This system, made up of strategically placed wells that inject treated water, helps maintain groundwater levels and keeps seawater from creeping inland.

During this trip, we'll get an up-close look at this impressive infrastructure. Experts from CUADLL (Community of Water Users of the Llobregat Delta) will guide us through how the system works, explaining the water treatment and distribution processes that help protect the aquifer.

We'll also visit the Museum of Water, where an interactive exhibit will explore the historical role of groundwater in Barcelona. The visit will also include a stop at a working water reinjection well.

To conclude the day, we'll have a wine tasting highlighting Catalonia's winemaking tradition, followed by lunch at the historic Can Serra building.

This excursion is the perfect mix of science, culture, and stunning landscapes—an experience you won't want to miss!

A4.2. Conference Excursions: Cultural field trip

Date: June 4th 2025, 9:00 to 13:45

Location: Estació del Nord, in front Julià Travel Office

If there is one artistic movement that has shaped Barcelona's unique identity, it is Modernism.

This distinctive architectural style, known as Catalan Modernism, was brought to life by visionary architects such as Lluís Domènech i Montaner, Josep Puig i Cadafalch, and its most renowned figure, Antoni Gaudí.

Our cultural journey begins at the Julià Travel office, located in the Estació del Nord, at 09:00hrs. From there, we’ll set out on foot to explore two of the city’s most historic neighborhoods: El Born and the Gothic Quarter. As we stroll through one of Barcelona’s most emblematic streets, we’ll encounter architectural gems such as the Arc de Triomf, the Barcelona Cathedral, and the stunning Basilica of Santa Maria del Mar. The façades of the buildings will captivate us with their intricate details and stories carved in stone.

Wandering through the narrow streets of the old city, we’ll uncover hidden corners and secrets from Barcelona’s rich past. After the walking tour, we'll board a comfortable, air-conditioned coach for a panoramic drive through the city.

The next part of our experience takes us to Montjuïc, Barcelona’s iconic hill and home to the 1992 Olympic legacy. We’ll enjoy several stops here, including a ride on the Montjuïc Cable Car, offering breathtaking views of the city. We’ll pass by the historic Montjuïc Castle and pause at the MNAC viewpoint to admire a unique perspective of Barcelona’s skyline.

On our way back, we’ll drive along Passeig de Gràcia, one of the city’s most elegant avenues, where we’ll pass by two of Gaudí’s masterpieces: La Pedrera and Casa Batlló.

This half-day excursion offers a perfect blend of history, architecture, and stunning views — an unforgettable way to experience the artistic and cultural heritage that defines Barcelona. Don’t miss it!
